Saturday/Sunday 17th & 18th June – The Whiting Bay Senior Gents Open
If the weather forecasts were to be believed we were in for a wet and windy Saturday for day 1 of our seniors open but as luck would have it we were spared that and a fine day followed for the 30 players who participated. The golf was far from easy with the fast running fairways and hard greens making it very hard to predict distance and bounce; straight ahead was far from guaranteed. Scoring was steady rather than spectacular but a fine collection of 2s were returned, all at the 17th.
1st Ronnie Mann (12) – 38 points
2nd Graham Wilks (20) – 37 acb
3rd Stan Rainey (12) – 37 acb
4th Michael Dewar (16) – 37
2s all at 17, Michael Dewar, Gordon Drummond, Gus MacLeod, Ronnie Mann & Stan Rainey
Sunday and day 2 saw a slightly larger field of 34 take part and although the skies were duller, there was no let up in the fiery course conditions. Having posted a useful 37 points on Saturday, Graham Wilks stormed home with a blistering 42 points to take first place on the day and in the overall championship.
1st Graham Wilks (20) – 42points
2nd Stewart McGregor (15) – 40
3rd David Brookens (14) – 39
4th Douglas Auld (20) – 38
2s Hector Dickson at the 4th
Overall Result over 36 holes
1st Graham Wilks – 79 points
2nd Ronnie Mann – 75 and Super Seniors winner
3rd Stan Rainey – 72
4th Cameron Bruce – 71
Yet again our thanks go to Colin and Jackie Nisbet for their generous sponsorship of this popular event. Thanks also to John, Nancy and Kirsty in the clubhouse where the constant supply of fine food and drink was, as ever, very much appreciated. A huge thanks to Stewart for the fine condition of the course. Conditions have been far from ideal with such a prolonged dry spell at a time of year when a little rain – preferably overnight of course – really is needed for consistent growth. We really are most grateful.
Finally, thanks to all who turned out to support us. Visiting golfers are always welcome at Whiting Bay and it’s nice to see so many familiar faces on such a fine weekend. See you all next year.
