Monday 22nd July – The WBGC Junior Open
As in recent years, and despite poor weather, we had an encouraging turnout of younger golfers for the 2024 edition of our Junior Open. Always played on the Monday immediately after our ‘big’ Open. The ‘Junior’ gives the youngsters a chance to play the course in prime condition and with the assistance of the many mums, dads, and other appropriate adults who come along to guide them round. The course is specially set up to allow all ages to enjoy a game, with the very young playing fewer holes and the teenagers playing a full 18 hole round and as is now traditional, a generous array of prizes ensures every participant leaves with something to remember their day at Whiting Bay GC.
Ewan Morrison, playing off a handicap of 36, returned a net score of 46 (something his dad can only dream about) to become the 2024 WBGC Junior Open Champion. Here he is receiving his trophy from organisers Alan and Jill Foggo.
Our thanks go to all who took part and to the adults who acted as guides, caddies, referees etc, with a special mention for Flora Jean Mack and Nellie McKechnie, perennials when it comes to helping out at this popular event. Without their input, this would be a very difficult day to stage. Thanks also to the course and clubhouse staff who carried on on Monday just as they had left off on Sunday – superb! Finally, another huge vote of thanks to the Adair and Foggo families for organising. It’s an encouraging sign to see so many youngsters interested in the game.
