Following the Spring Handicap here is the draw for the Thomson Cup. There’s a fair few Whiting Bay members involved.

To accommodate ongoing works at Machrie Bay GC the AGA Spring Handicap made an unexpected return to Whiting Bay having last been played there in 2019. A disappointing field of only 28 players enjoyed the course which had undoubtedly benefitted from the persistent rain the previous day after an uncharacteristically dry April. As in 2019 home players dominated the leaderboard with 8 of the top 10 places going to Whiting Bay members. The remaining 2 in the top ten each returned cards in the ‘stellar’ category with Craig Young of Balmore GC scoring a scratch 61 and Ewan McKinnon of Corrie GC returning a scratch 62. Fantastic golf by any stretch of the imagination. Whiting Bay member, David Brookens, who was runner up on the last occasion the Spring Handicap was played at Whiting Bay, ran out the overall winner this time with a net 59 and receives the prestigious Guy Spiers Trophy. He also won the J.C.Reid Cup for the best score by a senior golfer.
1st David Brookens (13) – 59
2nd Neil Lucas (12) – 61
3rd Craig Young (+2) – 63 acb and lowest gross
4th Ewan McKinnon (+1) – 63
Six 2s were recorded
Ewan McKinnon@13, Craig Young @ 16, David Jeffrey, Stewart Mackintosh, David Morrison at @ 17 and John Quigley @11.

2022 AGA Spring Handicap winner David Brookens with the Guy Spiers Trophy

Whiting Bay faced a rerun of last years final, meeting Machrie Bay GC in the first round of the ‘Seniors’. In the first pairing out John Pennycott and David Brookens playing Campbell Laing and Ron Woods managed to win by 2 holes on the 18th green but Stan Rainey and Dougie Auld found themselves unable to get on terms with Brian Sherwood and John Milesi and were 4 down with the final hole to play. All in all though a fine evening’s golf, played in the usual friendly spirit, in lovely weather and good company
So it’s congratulations to Machrie Bay and we wish them the best of luck in the following rounds.
Wednesday 27th April – The Richard Parfitt Trophy
19 played in our popular early season Stableford and yet again enjoyed perfect golfing conditions. Scoring was good with the top 13 cards all returning 30 points or more. Stewart Hammond beat that total by 11 points to record his 3rd first place finish in six weeks. Congratulations Stewart; a fine winning score.
