Sunday 20^th March – Lamlash Friendly

After the weather induced loss of the February fixture we were able to welcome our friends from Lamlash GC to a bright and sunny Whiting Bay for the last match in the series. Conditions could not have been better for this time of the year although the wind did increase as the morning wore on. On the day the match play element of the meeting ended up all square with each side claiming 2.5 points which left Whiting Bay as victors in the series by a margin of  2 games. The ‘Auld Cronies’ individual trophy presented a slight problem as the one game played at Lamlash in November was not scored on the Stableford system for some reason. The scoring for this prestigious trophy was therefore decided on the only two Stableford rounds played which meant John Pennycott won by 3 shots over Serge El-Adam.

Congratulations to the winners and also to Nicol Auld who scored a hole in one at the seventh. Thanks also to Nicol for his generous clubhouse hospitality afterwards.

Altogether a fine mornings golf and great fun for us all to meet up again in such pleasant conditions. Hopefully a sign of a great golfing season to come.

Sunday 13^th March – Winter Cup Rd 6

11 played and found conditions tricky with the wind strengthening as the morning progressed. Despite that scoring was reasonably good with the majority of cards returning scores in the net 60s. Stewart Hammond topped those with a net 65 just beating David Morrison with a better inward half

1st Stewart Hammond (35) – 65 acb

2nd David Morrison (10) – 65

3rd Gus Macleod (14) – 66

Gavin Mainds scored the only 2 of the day at the 17th and that helped him to the lowest gross score pipping David Morrison on a last 3 countback.

The overall winner of the 2021-2022 Winter Cup is John Pennycott with a fine 7 under par total for his best three rounds.

Sunday 6th March – AGA Winter League Rd 5

This year’s final round of the AGA Winter League made for an exciting climax as Whiting Bay and Corrie, the only teams with a chance of winning the trophy, met at Lamlash, Corrie needing only a draw and Whiting Bay needing a win. Whiting Bay duly delivered with a comfortable 3.5 to 0.5 victory although it has to be said the individual ties were decided on much narrower margins.
