Sunday 19^th December – Three Club Challenge

For a bit of pre festive fun we played a yellow tees Stableford with each player restricted to 3 clubs only. If that wasn’t challenge enough, the weather convenor added thick fog so that only on the short par threes were the greens visible from 30 yards out. Much guesswork, a few precautionary shouts of ‘fore’ and happily, no injuries! 14 played and the choice of clubs to use was quite varied with most ensuring they had at least packed a putter. David Morrison, one of the few to use a driver, came out top with an excellent 38 points.

Three 2s were returned; David Morrison at the 11th, Nicol Auld at the 13th and Dave Hackett at the 4^th.

Sunday 12^th December – Winter Cup Rd 3

13 played and most managed round before the deluge started. Conditions were still challenging though but John Pennycott defied them all to return a level 4s round that  gave him a net 60 and a 5 stroke margin over his nearest challenger.

David Morrison bagged the only 2 of the day at the 4^th.

Sunday 5^th December – AGA Winter League Rd 2

On a bright winter’s morning, over Shiskine in fine shape, Whiting Bay and Machrie shared the spoils in a closely fought encounter. With Shiskine and Corrie winning against Brodick and Lamlash respectively, the table after the 2^nd round is as follows;

Corrie: 4 points,

Lamlash: 2 points,

Whiting Bay: 2 points,

Shiskine: 2 points,

Brodick: 1 point,

Machrie Bay: 1 point.

The 3rd round is at Brodick on Sunday 9th January when we play Lamlash.

Sunday 28th November – Par 3 Competition

For the coldest day of the winter so far, we decided to play one of our summer favourites, the Par 3 Competition . It is really quite surprising how much difference moving the tees can make on a course with so many par 3s already on the card. Some found it easier than others of course, but that’s the way of golf, and there were some remarkable 2s scored out of a collection of 14 of them. Gus Macleod continued his recent form to win with a net 55.5 while Jamie Macpherson returned an impressive 60 to take the top scratch score.

Thanks to Nicol Auld for setting up the course. There were some very imaginative tee positions and his vision of the 4th hole will live on in nightmares for many. Great fun though and for such a cold day, a nice brisk game.

Sunday 21^st November – Lamlash Friendly

After last year’s pandemic induced hiatus it was nice to get back to meeting our friends from Lamlash in the first of our winter friendlies. This time Lamlash hosted us and laid on a fine morning’s weather with clear skies and a gentle if cold northerly breeze. Ideal winter golfing conditions and Lamlash member Scott Campbell made the most of them, returning an excellent gross 71, net 57 playing off 14, to win the individual event. On the team front all matches were close but in the end Lamlash prevailed by 2 & 1/2 to 1 & 1/2. 

Congratulations to Lamlash on a fine display of golf and thanks to them for presenting their course in such fine condition. The layout was ideal for winter golf and after the recent wet weather the course had dried out well with the greens putting straight and true. We look forward to welcoming them to Whiting Bay early in 2022
