Saturday 29^th June – AGA Hope Cup

Whiting Bay pulled off a creditable victory to beat the host club in the semi finals at Lochranza GC but unfortunately came up against a powerful Brodick team that prevailed comfortably in the final. Congratulations to them on their victory and thanks to Danny, Jamie, Nicol and Ryan for their efforts and for representing the club in such a sportsmanlike manner. Thanks also to the AGA for organising the event with its usual efficiency and to Lochranza GC for hosting. The course was in great condition and the layout proved itself more than equal to the task of hosting a ”major”.

Wednesday 26th June – The Cancer Relief Stableford Open

A good field of 23 played in the first of our summer charity support opens on another gorgeous summer’s day. Scoring was good with the top 6 players matching or beating par and CSS came down to 62/37 Stableford points. Kevin Jackson beat that comfortably to win with a fine round of 40 Stableford points

3rd Sandy Pringle (13) – 38

4th Stuart McGregor (13) – 37 acb

Magic 2s came from Danny Head at the 6th and Kevin Jackson at the 11th

Sunday 23^rd June – The Morton Quaich

19 played on a glorious morning which got even hotter as the day wore on so that by the end of the golf we were able to enjoy our refreshments in the sunshine at the outdoor tables behind the home green. Very entertaining, as was the tale of a past captain literally getting his knickers in a twist halfway through the back nine! But back to the golf. David Morrison shot a fine gross 70 to win by 2 shots from Kevin Jackson.

CSS came down to 62 and there were 3 magic 2s all scored at the 17th by Laurence Blair, Wayne Dale and Jamie Macpherson

Wednesday 19^th June – The Ballantyne Cup

After just missing out on the Seniors Open Championship, John Pennycott continued his fine run of form to win the Ballantyne Cup by one shot from Wolfi Kroner.

3rd Ronnie Mann (14) – 62

4th Kevin Jackson (10) – 63

Nicol Auld’s 72 was the best gross score.

19 played and the CSS stayed 63. There were no 2s recorded.

Saturday & Sunday 15^th and 16^th June – Gents Seniors Open

Heavy rain on Saturday morning did not quite shut the course but a decent afternoon forecast allowed the field to postpone until brighter skies appeared. Scoring was decent rather than spectacular and CSS stayed at 63/36 points. Visiting players fared well with only 4 home based players featuring in the top 10 placings. Graeme Andrew of Lamlash bagged the only 2 of the day at 2nd hole.

Sunday morning dawned bright and clear and again it was mainly visiting players who dominated with only 3 home players featuring in the top 10 places. Scoring at the top of the leaderboard was good but the rest of the field must have provided a counterbalance as CSS went out to 64/35 points. Dave Hackett and Pete Towndrow bagged the only 2s of the day at the 4th and 17^th respectively.

In a departure from previous years the 2019 Seniors Championship was decided over the course of both rounds and the winner on this occasion was, fittingly enough, our ever generous main sponsor, Colin Nisbet, with a 36 hole total of 73 Stableford points. Congratulations Colin – nice to see you taking something out of the very much you put in.

Thanks to all who came and supported our Seniors Open. It was generally agreed that the course is the best it has been for many years and heartfelt thanks go especially to Stewart, Corey and George for their expert work. Thanks also to John, Nancy, Jenni and Louise. It’s never easy keeping a crowd of golfers fed and watered but as usual the service in the clubhouse was first class. Last but by no means least, a huge thank you to Colin Nisbet for his generous sponsorship of this popular event to which so many familiar faces return year on year. We must be doing something right and hopefully we’ll see you all again in 2020.
