Monday 25th July – The WBGC Junior Open

Following the deluge that hit the big open over the weekend, numbers participating in the junior equivalent were a little down on last year probably due to people not realising just how resilient our course is. Monday morning provided kinder weather than expected though and the youngsters that turned up certainly had a fun day. There was a good spread of ages and as usual the golf was tailored to suit the different age groups. The winner and 2022 WBGC Open Champion is Scott Palin from Old Ranfurly Golf Club at Bridge of Weir. Playing off a handicap of 23 Scott shot an astonishing level 4s round of 72 from the yellow tees to claim his title. Here he is in the clubhouse receiving his trophy and Prizes from Flora Jean Mack.
Our thanks go to all who participated and to the adults who acted as guides, caddies, referees etc; without their input this would be a very difficult day to stage. Thanks also to the course and clubhouse staff who carried on on Monday just as they had left off on Sunday – superb! Finally another huge vote of thanks to the Adair and Foggo families and to Flora Jean Mack for their generous contribution of time, refreshments and prizes. We are once again indebted to them for staging this popular and important event.

See you again all in 2023.

Saturday and Sunday 23rd & 24th July – The Hunter Furnishings WBGC Gents Open

Well our luck finally ran out. After a succession of opens blessed with fine weather 2022 paid us back in spades. Spells of torrential rain on both Saturday and Sunday made for extremely difficult golfing conditions for those that completed the course. In view of that some of the scoring in all three divisions was surprisingly good with a healthy proportion of returns in the net 60s.

Saturday 23rd July – The Bank of Scotland Cup

81 played
1st Keith Martin (7) – 59
2nd Kenneth Sillars (20) – 60 acb
3rd Gavin Mainds (7) – 60
4th Andrew Martin (14) – 63
Seven 2s were returned. The full list is available on the club’s website

Sunday 24th July – The Royal Bank of Scotland Cup

75 played
1st David Blair (14) – 60
2nd Gavin Mainds (6) – 62 acb
3rd David Morrison (11) – 62acb
4th Nicol Auld (4) – 62
Fourteen 2s were returned. The full list is available on the club’s website.

The Whiting Bay Gents Open

The 2022 WBGC Open Champion is Gavin Mainds, who pipped Keith Martin on a countback after both returned scores of 121. Nicol Auld secured 3rd place with a total of 127. The best overall scratch scores came from Craig Young on 130 and Tom Paterson on 131. Congratulations to all; stunning golf considering the weather.
Once again our thanks go to Neil Richardson and Hunter Furnishings for their generous sponsorship. The Stressless Recliner chair and stool offered for the first hole in one remained unclaimed but Neil’s generosity enabled us to auction the item in the clubhouse. Past captain Andy Martin was the winner there after a bidding war with Freddie Zund. No doubt the hit on Andy’s bank account will feel less painful when contemplated from the comfort of his new recliner.
As always the course was in superb condition and coped well with the deluge over the two days. Stewart alone has carried the burden of looking after the course for some time now but the recent recruitment of a part time assistant is already helping him to take the course to a new level. Both he and Chris deserve our heartfelt thanks for their efforts.
In the clubhouse John, Nanci, Louise and Kirstie worked wonders in keeping such a large number of hungry, thirsty and WET golfers fed and watered and Jamie the Train kept up a constant supply of burgers lovingly cooked on the outside barbie. On that particular topic our thanks to Whiting Bay Improvements for the use of two magnificent Gazebos without which the barbie would have been a non starter. Thanks too to Sandy and Shonagh Pringle for erecting these for us.
Thanks to Jennifer Peebles, Flora Jean Mack and Jenni Martin who were always on hand to help out in the starter’s hut and clubhouse and to all our suppliers and friends who otherwise assisted with the occasion. Finally thanks to all participants who, despite the weather, once again made such a success of our flagship golfing weekend of 2022. See you all next year.

Wednesday 20th July – The McLintock Cup

Dating from 1908, the McLintock is one our most prestigious trophies and always draws a good number of players. This year’s competition was no exception and 41 played on a fine day but one in which the wind increased towards evening. There were 15 no returns and scoring was modest but David Morrison’s winning score of level par was no mean feat standing the conditions.

1st David Morrison (11) – 63
2nd Gavin Mainds (7) – 65
3rd David Blair (13) – 66
4th Nicol Auld (4) – 67

Tom Paterson recorded the best gross score on 70 strokes and 2s were recorded as follows; – Sandy Pringle @3, Gavin Mainds @ 4, Sean Higgins and David Morrison @ 17.

Sunday 17th July – The Raymond Curtis Salver

Dating from 1993, the Raymond Curtis Salver is one our more recent trophies and one of the few that until now did not have Nicol Auld’s name engraved as a winner. Nicol put that right today however scoring a fine net 62 on a day when a blustery wind and fast tricky greens called for careful shotmaking.
1st Nicol Auld (4) – 62 and lowest gross
2nd Stewart McGregor (14) – 63 acb
3rd David Blair (14) – 63
4th Sandy Pringle (14) – 64
2s were scored by Gavin Mainds @4, John Pennycott @ 7 and Stewart McGregor @ 15
