Friday 14th May – AGA Seniors Crystal Final

Friday 14th May – AGA Seniors Crystal Final

On a glorious evening for golf Whiting Bay again came up short in the final of the “Crystal”, this time losing on their home patch to Machrie. The match was a close one though with never more than a two hole margin in each game. In the opening game Whiting Bay pair of Gus MacLeod and Ronnie Mann lost by 2 holes on the final green to Machrie pair of Campbell Laing and Alex Morrison-Cowan while in the game behind John Pennycott and Dougie Auld found themselves 1 down to Machrie pair Brian Sherwood and John Milesi on leaving the 17th green. Needless to say the match was played in the best of spirits just as one would expect when so many island pals come together to enjoy their golf. For Whiting Bay it’s the second runners up spot in a row but for Machrie it’s many congratulations to the team on a fine performance.

Here’s a few pics of the course and competitors as well as, most importantly, the victorious Machrie team with the trophy in the clubhouse at the conclusion.

Sunday 9th May – The Eric Wood Stableford

A field of 17 for the 2021 running of the Eric Wood Stableford. Conditions were decent although a blustery wind arrived mid morning along with a short lived rain shower. Not bad compared to the forecast from a couple of days earlier. Scoring was also decent with 11 players carding 30 points or more. Sandy Pringle ran out the winner with a fine 39 points to pip Neil McKechnie by 2.

1st Sandy Pringle (15) – 39 points

2nd Neil McKechnie (12) – 37

3rd Ronnie Mann (12) – 35 acb

4th David Brookens (12) – 35 acb

Sandy Pringle and Douglas Auld bagged the only 2s of the day at the 7th and 17th respectively.

Friday 7th May – AGA Seniors Crystal Bowl

Friday 7th May – AGA Seniors Crystal Bowl

After a bye in last weeks opening round, as host club Whiting Bay entertained Shiskine at the semi final stage of the Seniors Crystal. Despite home advantage this was no easy tie for WBGC as members of the Shiskine team were closely familiar with the course and had beaten Lamlash in the opening round. As expected the tie was a tight affair. For Whiting Bay, Gus MacLeod and Ronnie Mann fought out a creditable draw with their Shiskine opponents while in the other game John Pennycott and Dougie Auld battled to a 2 hole advantage after 17 holes. This gave  Whiting Bay the match and a place in next week’s final against Machrie Bay GC who had overcome Brodick in the other semi.

Sunday 2nd May – AGA Spring Handicap at Brodick GC

Sunday 2nd May – AGA Spring Handicap at Brodick GC

Having missed out in 2020 due to the Covid pandemic, the AGA Spring Handicap got back underway at Brodick on Sunday and once again a Whiting Bay member came out on top. Following Kevin Macaleney’s winning score of 57 at Whiting Bay in 2019 David Morrison won at Brodick with an equally (at least) impressive net 60 against a par of 65 to win by 1 shot in a field of 52 island golfers.

All present agreed the course was in superb condition and thanks go to Brodick GC and its green keeping staff for that, to the clubhouse and staff for the warm welcome and catering and to the AGA for organising this popular event with its usual efficiency.

Finally though it’s congratulations to David Morrison on such a fine performance in winning this prestigious event.
