Saturday 4th September – Wolfi’s Open Stableford

Saturday 4th September – Wolfi’s Open Stableford

Well what a day that was. Perfect golfing weather and a huge turnout of golfers, from all parts of the island and beyond, many overcoming ferry induced travel difficulties, combined to help us commemorate our much missed friend and past captain, Wolfi Kroner. Gege, Markus and the rest of Wolfi’s family went to great lengths to provide a generous array of prizes for the golfers and for the well subscribed auction and raffle that took place afterwards. Many local individuals and businesses, far too many to name here, also contributed generously and the warmth of feelings freely expressed must have been a source of great comfort to all who miss Wolfi so much.

On a day such as this, the golf is perhaps not as important as we sometimes think it is but Wolfi loved his golf and he would have been delighted to know that 76 played in this event, a Stableford from the yellow tees just as he liked. The full result can be found on the club’s website but for the purpose of this intimation it is perhaps enough to know that Gay Mackay from Lamlash returned the top score – and of course the top score from a lady golfer – with a most impressive 44 points. Our own champion Jamie Stewart took the award for the best men’s score on 41 points and fittingly, young Ben Kroner came in as top junior.

Wednesday 4th August – The McNicol Cup

Wednesday 4th August – The McNicol Cup

Dating from 2013, the McNicol is another of our oldest trophies popular with local golfers and holidaymakers alike. 35 played in the 2021 competition and found the course at its firmest following the long summer dry spell with unpredictable bounces providing a counter point to the long running tee shots. Some coped better than others but perhaps unsurprisingly scoring was not quite as spectacular as it as been recently. Markus Kroner returned the best gross score of the day to win with a net 62 beating John Rankin by one shot.

1st Markus Kroner (5) – 62 and lowest gross

2nd John Rankin (7) – 63

3rd Gavin Mainds (7) – 64 acb

4th Jamie Macpherson (4) – 64

2s came from Sandy Kelso at the 1st, Finlay Aherne at the 3rd, Jamie Macpherson and Peter Towndrow at the 4th and Crawford Paterson at the 17th
